Prof. Olukanni, Dr. Dare, and Mr. Adeseye are joining the department in the context of the Africa-UniNet project EMR-MNet, which aims at characterizing the potential of tropical microbes for breaking down microplastics. To this end, microbes isolated from soil and water samples will be grown together with microplastics, and their DNA and metabolic activities will be characterized with whole-gemone-sequencing, transcriptomics, and metabolomics. With metabolic network modelling supervised by Prof. Steffen Waldherr and supported by Pablo Rolle, we will map the involved pathways and investigate options for biological upcycling of microplastics to useful materials.
