The "Expert View" article by Arindam Ghatak, Iro Pierides, Palak Chaturvedi, and Wolfram Weckwerth from the University of Vienna, in collaboration with Murdoch University from Australia, ICRISAT and NIPGR institutes from India, discusses the significance of millets for a sustainable future.

It highlights the crucial role of advanced technologies in enhancing resilience against abiotic stress and facilitating future breeding efforts.

This paper highlights the urgent need to diversify global agriculture by promoting millets—ancient, climate-resilient, and nutrient-rich cereals—as sustainable alternatives to dominant crops. It discusses the genetic diversity and agronomic advantages of millets, focusing on advanced genomic and multi-omics technologies for crop improvement. Furthermore, it underscores the importance of integrating artificial intelligence and machine learning to accelerate breeding strategies. The authors propose a PANOMICS framework to leverage molecular data for developing high-yielding, stress-tolerant millet varieties that enhance food security and support environmental sustainability.
